Here are 10 tips on getting ready for a successful college audition:
1. Research school admission and audition requirements, and that means every school on your hit list. You can count on an audition, as well as variables.
2. Evaluate repertoire selections with your teacher. This person knows your capabilities and will help you choose pieces that show off your potential without going beyond it.
3. Practice the music, but also practice auditioning, sometimes called “mock auditions.” Perform for friends, teachers, family, and anyone else who will listen.
4. Expression is as important as technical skill. As you practice, give both elements equal attention.
5. Review the basics, like music theory, ear training, and keyboard skills. Even if there’s no test requirement, you’ll be able to confidently converse with the audition committee.
6. Take every piece apart and be ready to begin playing at any point. The audition committee may ask you to repeat a small phrase.
7. Own your progress. Take master classes, play with a quartet, attend summer camp—any opportunity to sharpen your stage presence.
8. Impressions count. You want to stand in front of the audition committee looking like a confident performer!
9. Record your program—on a CD, tape, or DVD—to either send before the audition or leave behind. If no recording is required, use it to assess your playing.
10. Enjoy yourself! From selecting to practicing to performing your repertoire, have fun. The audition committee is looking for a passionate musician—not someone who knows it all.
